VA DCJS Positions Defined and Requirements
Private Security Services: Unarmed Security Officer / Courier
According to the Code of Virginia § 9.1-138, an "'unarmed security officer/courier' means a natural person who performs the functions of observation, detection, reporting, or notification of appropriate authorities or designated agents regarding persons or property on the premises he is contracted to protect, and who does not carry or have access to a firearm in the performance of his duties."
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Successful completion of all initial training requirements for each registration category, including firearms endorsement if applicable, requested pursuant to the compulsory minimum training standards in Part V (6 VAC 20-171-350 et seq.) of this chapter.
- Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
Training Requirements
18 Hours, Consisting of:
- 01E - Security Officer Core Subjects Entry-Level (18 hours)
Private Security Services: Armed Security Officer
According to the Code of Virginia § 9.1-138, an "'armed security officer' means a natural person employed to (i) safeguard and protect persons and property or (ii) deter theft, loss, or concealment of any tangible or intangible personal property on the premises he is contracted to protect, and who carries or has access to a firearm in the performance of his duties."
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Successful completion of all initial training requirements for each registration category, including firearms endorsement if applicable, requested pursuant to the compulsory minimum training standards in Part V (6 VAC 20-171-350 et seq.) of this chapter.
- Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
Training Requirements
40 - 42 Hours, Consisting of:
- 01E - Security Officer Core Subjects Entry-Level (18 hours)
- 05E - Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority (8 hours)
- 07E - Firearms Training Entry-Level (14 hours)
- 08E - Shotgun Training Entry-Level (2 hours) - If Applicable
Private Security Services: Private Investigator
According to the Code of Virginia § 9.1-138, an "'private investigator' means any individual who engages in the business of, or accepts employment to make, investigations to obtain information on (i) crimes or civil wrongs; (ii) the location, disposition, or recovery of stolen property; (iii) the cause of accidents, fires, damages, or injuries to persons or to property; or (iv) evidence to be used before any court, board, officer, or investigative committee."
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Successful completion of all initial training requirements for each registration category, including firearms endorsement if applicable, requested pursuant to the compulsory minimum training standards in Part V (6 VAC 20-171-350 et seq.) of this chapter.
- Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
Training Requirements
60 Hours, Consisting of:
- 02E - Private Investigator Entry-Level (60 hours)
Private Security Services: Special Conservator of the Peace
According to the Code of Virginia § 9.1-150.1, an "'special conservator of the peace' means any individual appointed pursuant to § 19.2-13 on or after September 15, 2004."
Registrations are issued for 12 months. There are two types of Special Conservators:
- Armed Special Conservators of the Peace
- Unarmed Special Conservators of the Peace
Training Requirements
24 - 40 Hours, Consisting of:
- 06E - Special Conservator of the Peace Entry-Level (24 hours)
- 07E - Handgun Training Entry-Level (24 hours) - If Applicable
Private Security Services: Personal Protection Specialist
According to the Code of Virginia § 9.1-138, an "'personal protection specialist' means any individual who engages in the duties of providing close protection from bodily harm to any person."
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Successful completion of all initial training requirements for each registration category, including firearms endorsement if applicable, requested pursuant to the compulsory minimum training standards in Part V (6 VAC 20-171-350 et seq.) of this chapter.
- Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.
Training Requirements
60 - 84 Hours, Consisting of:
- 32E - Personal Protection Entry-Level (60 hours)
